A spokesperson for China’s parliament highlighted the growing influence of Chinese companies in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) during a press briefing on Tuesday, specifically praising the achievements of AI startup DeepSeek.
Lou Qinjian, in response to questions about China’s AI progress, commended the work of DeepSeek’s young team, calling their accomplishments “commendable.” He emphasized that the company’s open-source approach plays a key role in promoting the global application of AI technology, reflecting what he described as “Chinese wisdom” contributing to the world’s technological advancements.
Lou also noted that the success of companies like DeepSeek demonstrates the innovation and inclusiveness driving China’s technological development. DeepSeek has recently garnered significant attention for its ability to release AI models at a fraction of the cost of those developed by major U.S. competitors like OpenAI, sparking a wave of excitement within the global tech industry.
Despite facing opposition in countries like South Korea and Italy—where concerns over privacy led to the removal of DeepSeek’s chatbot from national app stores—the company has received widespread support in China. Local governments and tech firms are quickly integrating its technologies into their systems.
The Hangzhou-based company is also reportedly accelerating the release of a successor to its R1 model, which debuted in January, with plans for a new iteration already in the works.
