President Donald Trump expressed support Wednesday for a proposal to return a portion of the savings generated by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) directly to U.S. citizens. Speaking at an investment conference in Miami, Trump outlined the administration’s consideration of a plan where 20% of the savings from DOGE’s cost-cutting measures would be distributed to the American public, while another 20% would be used to reduce the national debt.
Trump emphasized that such a dividend program would incentivize citizens to actively engage in identifying wasteful spending. “They’ll be reporting it themselves,” he said, adding that this would allow people to participate in the process of saving taxpayer money.
While returning to Washington aboard Air Force One, Trump was asked by reporters about the idea proposed by Musk. “I love it,” the president responded, voicing his approval of the concept.
The previous day, Musk had posted on his social media platform, stating that he would “check with the President” regarding the suggestion of a “DOGE Dividend” — a proposal that would provide refunds to taxpayers from the savings generated by DOGE’s efforts, which have already led to thousands of federal government employees being fired or laid off.
