Short interest on the Nasdaq rose by 0.6% in late March, according to data released by the exchange on Wednesday.
As of March 31, short interest had climbed to approximately 15.754 billion shares, up from 15.664 billion shares on March 14.
Short selling occurs when investors borrow shares and sell them, anticipating a price decline. The goal is to repurchase the shares at a lower price, return them to the lender, and profit from the difference. Short selling can also be used as a risk management strategy in a broader hedging approach.
