Producers across the United States plan to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2025, reflecting a 5% increase from the previous year, according to the Prospective Plantings report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Corn planting intentions have risen or remained unchanged in 40 out of 48 surveyed states. Notable acreage expansions of 400,000 acres or more are anticipated in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. If these projections hold, Idaho, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, and South Dakota will achieve record-high corn planting levels.
Conversely, soybean growers intend to plant 83.5 million acres in 2025, marking a 4% decline from the previous year. Significant reductions of 300,000 acres or more are expected in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. However, New York and Ohio are poised to set record-high soybean acreage.
The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official survey-based estimate of farmers’ planting plans for 2025. NASS based its findings on surveys conducted in the first two weeks of March, collecting data from nearly 74,000 farm operators nationwide.
Key Findings from the Report:
Wheat: Total planted area is projected at 45.4 million acres, a 2% decline from 2024.
Winter wheat acreage is estimated at 33.3 million acres, down 2% from the previous estimate and less than 1% lower than last year.
Other spring wheat acreage is forecasted at 10.0 million acres, down 6% from 2024.
Durum wheat planting is expected to total 2.02 million acres, a 2% decline from the previous year.
Cotton: Planted area is estimated at 9.87 million acres, a significant 12% drop from last year.
Additionally, NASS released the quarterly Grain Stocks report, offering insights into on-farm and off-farm stocks as of March 1.
