Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. (NYSE: ICE), a global leader in technology and data services, has introduced Japanese Power Futures to enhance its comprehensive energy product suite. This addition allows market participants to manage exposure to the day-ahead auction price of the Japanese Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) for both the Tokyo and Kansai regions.
With the launch of four new Japanese Power Financial Futures—covering baseload and peakload for each of these areas—ICE strengthens its position as a key player in global energy markets. These new futures contracts will be available in monthly, quarterly, and seasonal formats, in addition to Calendar and Fiscal Year contracts, providing flexibility for energy market participants.
Gordon Bennett, Managing Director of Utility Markets at ICE, emphasized the strategic value of this expansion: “By offering Japanese Power Futures alongside our natural gas, coal, oil, clean energy, and carbon contracts, ICE is equipping customers with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of global energy markets. Secondary fuels like electricity are influenced by primary energy sources, such as natural gas and coal, which are crucial to Japan’s power generation. Trading these contracts on ICE facilitates better price discovery and improved market transparency.”
The new futures contracts will also allow traders to manage price differences between the Tokyo and Kansai regions, mitigating exposure to regional risks and enabling more efficient cross-regional trading strategies.
ICE’s global energy markets continue to lead in liquidity, with Japanese Power Futures complementing a broad array of products, including benchmark contracts like JKM LNG (Platts), TTF, Henry Hub, and ICE Brent. Open interest across ICE’s energy markets has grown 20% year-over-year, underscoring the growing demand for energy derivatives.
